The Table

Keywords: Sustenance and Limitation

The Table is a triangular, battered, old, wooden, kitchen-type table, with a drawer facing towards us, partly open. The table top is of wood, with a strong accentuated grain. The table legs and sides are painted a dim blue with chipped and faded patches of colour. The triangle of The Table seems to extend for a long way towards the wall, yet the wall itself seems close. The background to The Table is a dimly lit, old-fashioned kitchen. The tones are muted, the only strong colours being those of The Table itself.

The open drawer reveals a shadowy interior from which the slim hint of a ray of light shines. this is not a strong radiance or dramatic illumination, but a faint ray of light, as if a tiny reflected ray of sunlight had somehow reached through the shadows of the drawer. This light is a promise rather than a revelation; the deep shadow of the drawer, however, seems to counterbalance it.

The Table is whatever sustains and limits any entity or form. Food, all patterns of nourishment, be they physical, emotional, mental or spiritual, are embodied by this image. Also life-habits, modes, wheels and cycles of thought, and both new and conditioned or addictive sensations. As a surface and supportive working area, The Table includes the reflective iterative or form-giving potential of the Shield in elemental magic, shown by the Ace of Earth in tarot. Like regular tarot Trumps, however, the Dreampower cards represent more than one relative Element and have many powers embedded within them.

Upon The Table is a bowl of fruit, with one tiny apple revealed. Eating this apple may bring the deathly sleep of life, but the same fruit may have another significance within the Underworld. The fruit of the upper world brings sustenance and death, whereas the fruit of the Underworld, property of the Faery Queen, brings change and mysterious life. The changes and life-mysteries are revealed in the deeper Trumps. Within the hidden recesses of The Table, represented by the partly opened drawer, are direct ways to the Pearl Realm, to the Light Below. This entrance to the deeper Realms is revealed more fully in the Trump of The Stairway.

In a personal reading or vision The Table reveals whatever sustains and limits the individual. It is often found in association with a deeper Trump that indicates a path to change.
