The Observatory

Keywords: Transformation of perception and understanding

The Observatory indicates a profound change of perception; at its most profound this change is from the transpersonal to the universal. The card shows a building floating in the stars, paradoxically incomplete. A complete Observatory is the place in which we look for that which is beyond ourselves, but in this Trump the structure itself is deconstructing.

While the Trump of Becoming reveals the human body, soul, spirit or individuality vanishing and returning to the Void, The Observatory shows collective awareness changing through long time-cycles and the individual equivalent transformations of perception within a lifetime. Thus in The Observatory we still remain human, even though the solidity of the platform is uncertain. This Trump is involved in the Underworld power of prophecy, in which all preconditioned forms are broken down and future potentials are discovered through the gaps in that collapsing form.

A complete observatory is a point of reference, designed and built to act as an interface between the human world-view and the stars. It relates movements over long time periods, and although our card shows a Gothic-style building, it could equally well be a megalithic stone circle. But the structure in the card is partial, it is losing its fixed shape, and we feel that eventually it will disappear or come apart into its constituent elements.

In a personal reading or vision this card indicates a change of understanding in life, often with the added implication that this change comes through the breaking up of an old or outmoded frame of reference. It also represents being cast adrift without the rigid habits of life that previously provided (false) protection. In this sense The Observatory relates to the transformative Trump of The Opener.
