The Maze is a partner Trump to The Maker. In the image we see solid ground with a flight of steps leading to path through rocks. The path leads into a walled maze, which is in a natural or organic spiraling pattern. There is nothing in the centre of the maze, and beyond it reality seems to soften and blur into formlessness.

The flight of steps that leads down is a branching of The Stairway (leading to new levels of realization), while the environment of the Trump is a landscape that gradually moves from rocks to maze to formlessness. This is the work that The Maker is engaged in: pattern-forming out of the Void.

In a personal reading The Maze embodies endless opportunity, out of an image that seems to lead nowhere. The opportunity is for creation or destruction in a life pattern, as The Maze is a Trump deep within the Underworld, in the Whirlpool Realm which gives it its spiraling shape. In this sense The Maze is on the threshold between form and formlessness, for it is a seemingly closed pattern that holds a mysterious potential.

The secret of maze-walking is in the experience, in being there, rather than in any goal at the centre. The act of weaving around the maze pattern transforms our consciousness and energies, attuning them to the pattern itself, realigning us. The Maze is endless opportunity, because walking it realigns our deepest inner patterns. If you walk The Maze you reach another state of being, which may or may not be another relative place. Sometimes, in personal readings, this Trump will represent resonances and obligations from past lives, and personal or family ancestral mazes or genetic patterns. These hold both creative and destructive potential for us all.

In ancestral cultures, mazes similar to the one shown in the card were more important religious and initiatory structures. Perhaps the most valuable clue to the power of The Maze is that having entered we must travel three times around, always turning outwards to reach the centre.
