A man and woman sit upright in close coitus. their arms and legs are wrapped tightly around one another in a complex knot. Their faces merge as a rebus and unnaturally look towards us. The merged male and female face has three eyes, with the central one slightly open. The right and left eyes are fully open and of different colours. The colouration of the man is copper and of the woman is gold. They sit upon the back of a huge turtle. The turtle is upon a low black shore with filled glistening mineral specks. We see a gray-green but mainly white stormy ocean in the background filling the rest of the image, with huge waves towering up out of sight.

This Trump embodies the perfect union of powers out of the Void, with a particular resonance for us as human beings. It works on three levels or in three modes, which relate broadly to the Three Realms of Whirlpool, Pearl and Stone. At its deepest level (The Whirlpool), that of powers uttered from the Void, it shows the fusion of polarities which leads to further patterns, new life-forms. At this level it represents the union of the powers shown individualistically as The Raptor and The Maiden, the universal male and female, regardless of form. We feel these powers in terms of our own sexuality, but in truth our gender is simply one of the countless polarities of power out of the Void.

At the next level, the Pearl Realm, Conjunction refers to the sexual powers of transformation and polarity magic. The Trump shows that the sexual union of human partners is a path to change, toward something more than seemed possible as isolated individuals. But the idea of isolation and the power of fear cut us off from our true bisexuality within, so the card also represents the arousal and fusion of male and female energies within one person, thus emerging alchemically as a new being.

In the Stone Realm this image reveals the pre-history of the human race, with many ancestral memories accessible through its consciousness. The conjoined beings are an early type of human, mythic and ancestral, yet predicting the most advanced future of the human race. Working with this image gives access to ancestral and racial memories and, at the deepest level, to a proto-human consciousness. The man/woman looks at us out of the card as our most distant ancestors, looking at the future races and ages of humanity. We are the ancestors and they are us.

The Environment of the Image

The raging ocean and mineral beach show the emergence of stars out of the Four Powers of universal chaos. Chaos is used here in the original (classical Greek) sense of the word, as the unformed potential of energy which becomes increasingly patterned through reiteration or mirroring. The turtle embodies the foundation of primal life and consciousness, the fusion of the Elements into an enduring form. Living in both the waters of Chaos and the sands of the stars, it is a creature of immense age, strength and wisdom. It combines outer pattern and form in the shell with inner softness and vulnerability, and carries the emerging humans upon its back between the Realms.
