Becoming or Vanishment

Keywords: Becoming consciously transparent; also loss of identity

Becoming is a naked half-being; we do not know the gender. It is basically human, with pale skin, short fair hair in a bristling halo and bright blue eye(s). Its face is smiling merrily, its eye is full of joy. We see only the left side, facing front, with the right side vanished into the void. The void is the dark blue-black of deep space and night filled with tiny random brilliant stars. The figure's left hand and forearm seem to beckon us, in a manner reminiscent of The Teller. The left leg stands straight and firm upon the void which fills the entire image.

Becoming is also un-becoming or Vanishment. This Trump shows a half-being, but not because he or she is incomplete. The being in the image is approaching reality, becoming consciously transparent and vanishing willingly into the entirety of Being, into the Void. The key phase with this Trump is vanishing willingly, an intentional dissolution towards a new reality. Whereas Conjunction embodies the idea of life emerging out of the Void as part of universal utterance out of Chaos, Becoming shows that one being may consciously merge with all Being. This Trump obviates all patterns through intent, through a complete transformation and reversal of conditioned reality. The becoming inherent within the image is the invisible half, soon to be completed upon the vanishment of the half that we can still see.

The half is joyous and beckons for us to join in the great mystery of un-becoming. Just as The Storyteller calls us into the beginning of a pattern or life sequence, so Becoming/Vanishment invites us into the universal story of non-being. In a direct sense, if The Storyteller brings us to birth in the limited surface world, then the half invites us to die merrily out of that world and vanish into truth.

In a simpler sense, this card indicates that half of our being is in the invisible worlds and that our outer nature is incomplete. The incompleteness, however, is a property of consciousness, for if we change our consciousness we gradually discover our hidden nature, our true self. In personal reading this card will often indicate loss of identity and sometimes implies self-sacrifice for the benefit of others. Like its polar or partner Trump of Conjunction, Becoming bridges between the Whirlpool and Pearl Realms, and can show the deepest transformations at work within an individual.
