A message and a meditation
from R J StewartSpring Equinox 2003

Dear readers, friends, and initiates of the Inner Temples

No matter what our political persuasion, I suggest to you all that there is a task
appropriate for us all at this time of burgeoning war.

It seems likely that many people will be killed in the hostilities. At this
point they are all humans, all equally in need of compassion and help,
regardless of religion, politics, or ethnic origin.

I propose that we all spend a few minutes each day in the Inner Convocation
to mediate compassion, from the Four Temples (especially that of the West)
and from the sacred Inner Flame of Being, outwards to those suffering and
dying in the conflict. While doing so, open the Way, and invite those who
have died into the inner realms, to be met therein by the guardians or inner
contacts most appropriate for them.

Those of you that are able to mediate those specific death visions that have
been taught to many groups should add these to your inner work at this time
of war and crisis. A short form of the compassionate death vision is include here,
for all to work with freely.

When we do this are in the company of Priests and Priestesses of the Inner Temples, greatly supported and strengthened by their presence. This spiritual communion of the Inner Temples both transcends and underpins all outer religions and beliefs.
Here follows a shortened form of one of the death visions that has been taught to several groups over the last 12 years or so. This is intentionally brief so that we can focus on it from time to time through the day/night. Some of you will be familiar with versions of this material from Priests and Priestesses Inner Temple workshops.

Note: there may be some details of this short visionary meditation that are unfamiliar to you, such as the chant in part (1). Just pass over those, and work with the basic images and concepts, which are easy to use.

The Death Vision, for helping those who have died

(Light a candle if you can: if circumstances do not allow, work directly with the inner flame)

1. Be still, stilling Time, Space, Movement. (Chant OAI if possible)

2. Open out the 7 Directions, light the Flame (or sense it) in the center. It becomes a Pillar of Light.

3. Go to the spiritual Convocation of Timeless Priestesses and Priests, gathered around the Pillar of Light.

4. You will be drawn to work in one of the Directions, East, South, West, or North, with one of the Four Temples and its inner contacts (Priests/Priestesses). Do not pre-empt this by choosing a Temple or a Direction, let it come from the inner contacts/by intuition.

5. In that Direction, sense see and feel those that have recently died: sense them crossing the empty expanse between worlds and lives. Reach out to them with compassion. Some will refuse to move, others will be more mobile. Work with the inner priest/priestesshood to help those who have died (in the conflict) to move.

6. See sense and feel a wide river, with a bridge over it. Build this image strongly, and project it to those who have recently died. It will open out easily, as this form has been in use in many spiritual and magical traditions for thousands of years, and has inner mysteries woven into it.

7. Direct and encourage those who have died to cross the bridge. Traditionally there is a mountainous landscape, far away, on the other side. Do not try to force them, and do not cross with them. You may sense spiritual beings who help them to cross or act as gatekeepers at the entrance to the bridge.

8. Return out of the inner realms to the convocation, and commune for a few moments with the Pillar of Light. Let this sustain and nourish and vitalize you. Breath it into your body

9. Be aware again of the candle flame (the inner light within you). Be in the convocation, and in the outer world simultaneously.

10. Affirm the Directions again, close your working, return to your outer awareness.
Note: this should only take a few minutes. Repeated short sessions of this, once every day for example, are more productive than a long intense session. This kind of inner work improves with repetition. Ideally do this at the same time each day or night (i.e. in your own time zone wherever you may be).

Good wishes and light to you all in dark times
